As an
inclusive mantra, “Om Shanti” is chanted for many purposes. The divine
attributes of calmness, serenity, wholeness, cohesiveness, unity, peace and
combining terrestrial and celestial spheres are invoked when one incants this
mantra to achieve a state of consciousness one desires. This blog post explains
the purpose of the mantra and how you can intone Om Shanti to achieve peaceful
mind.
Dimension
The word peace
has two dimensions: externality and internality. To achieve peace in the mind
what is required is the internality which is often stated as inner peace. Lord Buddha
emphasised inner peace as paramount when he said” Peace comes from within; do
not look it without”.
Everyone needs
salvation or freedom from three type of worries that beleaguer him. Karma is
the first manacle that stands between you and emancipation. Karma is defined as
sum total of the effect of one’s actions in present and previous existence that
weigh on him to the extent that Karmic results influence or shape his present
and/or future existence. Deliverance is also required from the ambience within
which you are placed. Ambience, the second source of your worries denotes all
persons and matters that surround you. For example members of family, friends,
relations, bosses and colleagues are living and breathing persons. There are
matters such as buildings, offices and the five elements. Third source for your
worry is you, yourself. This is the most crucifying incarceration from where
you need to liberate yourself.
Regime
1. Choose a time slot that is comfortable
to you when you are fresh. Ideally, time before sun rise is very conducive to
chant Om Shanti for peaceful mind
2. Duration of time is around 30 minutes, and
frequency is at-least five times a week
3. You can choose any direction; North,
North-East and East are often recommended though
4. There are no specific dress or posture.
Clean cloth and Ardha padmasana posture suit fine
5. Stay motionless always and preferably
eyes closed
6. Phases:
a time tested procedure is to chant Om Shanti for 27 or 36 times and
seek deliverance from Karma and then repeat the mantra in stated numbers to
obtain freedom from ambience. Lastly, intone the mantra in slated number to
make yourself free from your own self.
7. As you proceed you must go deep into
your consciousness. Initially you should master the primary or surface level of consciousness thereafter proceed to
middle level and lastly towards the third one of deep level of consciousness.
In cosmic
analysis, in addition to achieving peaceful mind the mantra helps you in
syncing your body, mind and spirit after a period of time.
