How to avoid doctor dependency syndrome?



A person who persistently and frequently consults a doctor for even a minor ailment or onset of a symptom is said to be affected by doctor dependency syndrome. Beginning as a concept this psychological condition has got so aggravated that today it is included in the cognitive behavioural theory in psychology. Let me give you some ideas as to how you can avoid this syndrome.
1.         Banish from your heart the childhood memories of seeing the doctor frequently for treatment for even minor illness
2.         Always try home-made remedy before checking with a doctor. Learn first–aid techniques such as dressing wounds, scratches and applying balms, self-care techniques in managing head-aches, vomiting, constipation, gastric etc.
3.         Take care in galloping too many antibiotics and other habit forming drugs. Instead get your doctor to prescribe supplementary vitamins and minerals that you take every day religiously. As regards to vitamins you give break of few weeks after taking these for a 3 month period
4.         Allow nature to be your first port of call. In my childhood there was a saying: “feast when in cold and fast during fever”. In most cases your food habits influence your health conditions
5.         Ignore prompts and hints from family members asking you to see a doctor when you catch a chill or have running nose. This is another instance where the body expels phlegm from your body
6.         Understand the symptoms and causes of frequently occurring illnesses such as common cold or pain in the body. Do not rush into thinking a symptom as disease. For example, not every pain in the chest amounts to a break-down of the heart
7.         Drink plenty of lukewarm water and go for liquid foods when you have slight temperature or non-recurring constipation
8.         Talk to your friends, colleagues and get some of their ideas in treating milder form of diseases such as head-aches
9.         Take rest when you are physically exhausted
10.       If you are not in good health for some time, then resort to Buddhist Bhavana to bring solace.
