Originally, Lord Buddha introduced the concept of hand sign to internalize energy and to project energy outward as well. These signs came to be known as Mudra during the time of Lord Buddha and thereafter. Lord Buddha showed very few mudras. After him, Rishis and Yogis went on to develop quite a number of mudras. These mudras are limited in their scope as these were used mainly in spiritual pursuits and in devotional or expressive dances by artistes.

Hand sign, as already mentioned has twin role of managing internal energy flow and external energy projection.
