Cuprite, Gemstone for Women

The irony of Cuprite Is phenomenal; it is made from copper oxide a widely occurring mineral in several countries. Yet gem quality Cuprite is rare and sought after as collectors’ gem. There is another twist to the story. This gem is, after diamond the best friend for a woman.

Cuprite is fairly a new finding that came to the attention of gem lovers in 1850s when it was picked up in South-western Africa. Its bright red colour and translucence kindled much attention and publicity leading to heavy mining of the mineral. By 1950s almost all the best quality red stones have vanished from the market. Today even spotting gem quality Cuprite of 2 carats and more from Africa is scarce. But then new findings were made in Australia, USA and Mexico to alleviate the situation.

By this time, gem & jewellery industry has discovered that there are two distinct varieties of Cuprite: one is bright red colour stone dubbed as “Ruby Copper” presently mined in Namibia. The second one is lustrous and opaque stone of crimson colour found mainly in Mexico. The former is often of cubic crystal structure while crimson Cuprite is of octahedral crystal structure. Though this technicality is not much of importance to the users, for the gem collectors and enthusiasts ruby copper has become a sought after item due to its rarity, crystal structure and the brilliant red colour.

Tonal colour of red Cuprite can vary between crimson to maroon shades as well as brownish to purplish red. Apart from the fascinating colour being a big plus, Cuprite suffers from being so brittle. Its Mohs’ hardness ranges between 3.5 to 4.0. Consequently the gemstone can be easily scratched or cracked during mounting on jewellery articles. Still it has not dampened the enthusiasm of gem & jewellery industry. Undaunted jewellers are turning out articles including ring, earring, pendant, bead necklace that are set with this remarkable gemstone.

Cuprite is definitely a gemstone for women. After diamonds, they would find Cuprite gemstones as the best friends for them. Cosmics of Cuprite is again tinged with irony. Being a cosmic gem with an immense resource of male power known as Yang, you might think it is meant for macho men. Ironically Cuprite is used by women for issues bordering on their femininity. There again we see opposites. For example, for a woman who fear heights and altitudes Cuprite is the solace. She can carry it with her while flying in aeroplanes or working in high rise offices. On the contrary, in her own physique she can use Cuprite for issues emanating in and around lower abdomen. Dysfunction of womb, irregular cycle of menses, and deficiency in sexuality are some of the conditions for which Cuprite can give redress. In sum, Cuprite remains one of the key cosmic gems for women.
